Follow-Me in Austria: “Ingenious tool for TV light”

Earlier this year, Viennese BMS Production Group, a client of German Follow-Me Partner LMP, was responsible for the technical production of the live ORF broadcast from Kirchleitn Kleinwild in St. Oswald Austria. Kirchleitn Kleinwild is a holiday village, set in beautiful countryside, that was used for the staging of the TV broadcast of the Winter hits from the stars of Folk music.
“Since we had already covered the stage situation with a Follow-Me 3D TWO system in summer 2021, we decided to integrate the entire site into the system in winter 2022,” explains Fritz Staudinger, Managing Director of BMS. “We installed the camera on the top floor of an adjacent building, protected from the weather, so that we could capture the entire area, including the open-air stage.”
Director Fabienne Pinter made perfect use of the newly created 360° situation. In addition to the classic open-air stage, that the Follow-Me 3D system was originally based on, new viewing angles and performance areas were introduced throughout the location. Due to the accessibility of the new lighting set up, the corridors between the individual areas were also used for the filming of the performers.
During the on-site inspection, lighting designer Norbert Wolfsberger used a 3D scanner to create a “point cloud” of the entire site. This was imported into WYSIWYG and nine T-bars were mounted throughout the site, accommodating a variety of moving and static lights.
Using the point cloud mapping and a laser range finder, Martin Staudinger measured the Follow-Me system on site. “The frontlights and backlights were then calibrated and programmed across the entire site with live operation during the show by two lighting technicians using the Follow-Me 3D TWO system. This enabled the shows hosting couple, Stefanie Hertel and Arnulf Prasch, to be lit in the right light anytime and anywhere. The tracking via the crosshairs also allowed a subtle brightness control via the lighting desk,” Staudinger noted that “Follow-Me is an ingenious tool for TV light that gives us many insights and opportunities as well as the joy of future challenges.”
Due to their good experiences and growing TV productions, BMS Production Group decided to upgrade from a Follow-Me 3D TWO system to 3D SIX, allowing for more performers to be simultaneously tracked in their next productions.
The live broadcast was viewed January 22, 2022 on ORF and MDR.
